The Qatari Military Attache to Italy, Major General (Navy) Hilal Ali Al Mohannadi, emphasized the significance of the visit by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Italy as a representation of the strong relationship and cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the military field. This visit serves as an opportunity to further enhance strategic cooperation in the military sector, building upon a historic collaboration that began in the 1980s and was solidified through an agreement signed between the Ministries of Defense in 2016. The military relations between Qatar and Italy are a crucial part of a broader strategic partnership focused on security and defense.

The initial military cooperation between Qatar and Italy in the 1980s saw the Qatari naval forces acquiring ships equipped with Italian-made guns and ammunition, leading to significant advancements in military collaboration. The agreement signed in 2016 paved the way for extensive cooperation in acquiring combat aircraft, helicopters, naval vessels, radar systems, and advanced equipment. Training and joint exercises have also been key components of the partnership, with a focus on training pilots, military personnel in the naval forces, academic military studies, and various specialized training programs.

The military cooperation agreement between Qatar and Italy has proven to be fruitful, with the Qatari armed forces receiving all seven naval vessels manufactured in Italy, with only one yet to be delivered. A significant portion of the order for helicopters from Italy has also been fulfilled, demonstrating the commitment to enhancing the military capabilities of Qatar through collaboration with Italy. Since 2017, hundreds of personnel from the Qatari naval forces have undergone training in Italy, including helicopter operations, advanced aircraft training, air defense systems, special forces training, and other specialized courses.

Since 2017, a total of 154 courses have been organized in Italy, benefiting 952 individuals, with a focus on developing the skills and capabilities of personnel from the Qatari armed forces. In addition, joint exercises involving over 300 individuals have been conducted since 2021, further strengthening the partnership between Qatar and Italy in the military sector. Over 400 mutual visits by military delegations between the two countries have also taken place since 2017, showcasing the ongoing collaboration and cooperation in security and defense matters.

The visit by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Italy signifies the continued commitment to enhancing bilateral relations in the military field, as well as broader strategic partnerships focused on security and defense. The strong historical collaboration between Qatar and Italy, which began in the 1980s and was strengthened through the agreement signed in 2016, underlines the importance of the relationship between the two countries. The ongoing cooperation in acquiring military equipment, training personnel, and conducting joint exercises reflects the shared commitment to enhancing the military capabilities and readiness of both Qatar and Italy. As the partnership continues to evolve and expand, the future looks promising for further advancements in security and defense cooperation between the two nations.
