The number of families benefiting from the “cost of living allowance” in Bahrain has increased to 133,000 between May and August 2024, up from 130,000 at the end of the previous year. This allowance is designed to support low-income households in dealing with rising costs. A recent report from the Ministry of Social Development also shows that 185,807 families are now receiving cash compensation due to the removal of subsidies on meat, representing an increase of 5,000 from the previous year.
In addition to the families benefiting from the cost of living allowance and cash compensation for meat subsidy removal, there are also individuals receiving social security, disability allowances, and fire compensation. Specifically, 17,694 individuals are benefiting from social security, while 14,466 receive disability allowances, and there are 19 beneficiaries of fire compensation. This assistance is crucial in providing support to those in need within the Bahraini community.
The cash compensation for the removal of meat subsidies is based on the applicant’s registration as the head of the household in the Information and eGovernment Authority. This support is available to both men and women of all ages, regardless of their employment status, income level, property ownership, or business records. The number of families benefiting from meat subsidies has increased by 22% since the Cabinet’s decision in 2015, growing from 147,971 to 185,807 families according to the latest statistics.
The disbursement of cash compensation is carried out every three months, in coordination with the Information and eGovernment Authority and the Ministry of Finance and National Economy. Citizens can register directly through the electronic system, with assistance available from social services staff at community centers for those facing challenges with online registration. To qualify for meat subsidies, applicants must be Bahraini nationals registered as the head of a household in the Information and eGovernment Authority and must hold permanent residency in Bahrain.
It is important to note that monthly income, including salary, property ownership, and business records, does not impact eligibility for this support. The goal of these allowances and compensations is to ensure that those in need receive the necessary assistance to navigate the financial challenges they may face. The government’s efforts to provide support to low-income households reflect a commitment to the well-being and welfare of all citizens in Bahrain.
