The North Al Batinah Governorate in Muscat recently celebrated the launch of the first health walkway dedicated to the visually impaired in the Sultanate of Oman. The event took place in Al Hambar Park in the Wilayat of Sohar, under the patronage of His Excellency Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi, the Governor of North Al Batinah. This celebration coincided with the International White Cane Day, and was organized in cooperation with the Al Noor Association for the Blind. During the launch event, Governor Al Kindi emphasized the importance of empowering the blind and providing them with opportunities to participate actively in various aspects of life. He also highlighted the need to continually develop public facilities to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Mohammed bin Ismail Al Balushi, the Chairman of the Al Noor Association for the Blind in North Al Batinah Governorate, explained that the initiative of the health walkway for the visually impaired is a result of fruitful cooperation between government agencies and the association. This partnership reaffirms the joint commitment to empower the blind community and facilitate their daily lives. Al Balushi also stated that the White Cane Walkway serves as a model for future projects that cater to the needs of the visually impaired. The association looks forward to more similar initiatives that enhance the independence of the blind and support them in leading their lives with ease.

The Health Walkway for the Blind stretches for approximately a kilometer and is equipped with features that enable people with visual disabilities to move around easily. The walkway includes an explanatory map in Braille, allowing the blind to familiarize themselves with the available services and facilities in the area. Additionally, slopes have been prepared to facilitate movement, ensuring smooth access and mobility for all visitors. This project is part of the ongoing efforts of the North Al Batinah Governorate to support the blind community and provide public facilities that cater to their needs.

During the celebratory event, an accompanying exhibition was organized showcasing assistive tools for the blind, such as white canes and devices that aid in improving their daily lives. The exhibition also featured modern technologies aimed at enhancing mobility for visually impaired individuals. The presence of such tools and technologies highlights the commitment of the local community to support and empower the blind population in the region. The event not only marked the inauguration of the Health Walkway for the blind but also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the visually impaired and the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces.

Overall, the launch of the health walkway in Al Hambar Park is a significant milestone in promoting the rights and well-being of the visually impaired community in the Sultanate of Oman. The collaborative efforts between government agencies and the Al Noor Association for the Blind demonstrate a shared commitment to empowering individuals with visual disabilities and ensuring that they have equal access to public facilities. This initiative serves as a stepping stone towards creating a more inclusive and accommodating environment for all members of society, regardless of their abilities. As the North Al Batinah Governorate continues to prioritize the needs of the blind population, it is hoped that similar projects will be developed to further enhance the independence and quality of life for visually impaired individuals across the region.
