The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Doha, Qatar has recently launched the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) services at Leabaib Health Center, making it the third health center in the country to offer this pilot elderly care service. The ICOPE program, developed by the World Health Organization, aims to help healthcare systems better manage the health and well-being of older adults by addressing early declines in intrinsic capacity. By focusing on maintaining and improving functional ability, the program enables older people to live independently for as long as possible.

Qatar is proud to be the first pilot site in the Middle East for ICOPE, reflecting the country’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare. The new clinic at Leabaib Health Center is part of efforts to integrate specialized services for older adults into primary care. Recognizing the increasing risks elderly individuals face in experiencing declines in their physical and mental capacities, PHCC has collaborated with Hamad Medical Corporation to provide care for individuals aged 60 and above through a person-centered, integrated approach coordinated by a multidisciplinary team.

The ICOPE clinic will utilize a screening tool to assess various aspects such as visual impairment, hearing loss, cognitive decline, depressive symptoms, malnutrition, and mobility loss and falls. Initially available to registered patients at Leabaib Health Center, the service will soon be open to referrals from all health centers. The clinic will operate every Monday from 8am to 1pm, with the goal of not only treating medical issues but also supporting the elderly in remaining active and engaged in their communities.

By identifying risks early and offering timely interventions, PHCC aims to prevent or slow down the progression of frailty and functional decline in elderly individuals. This proactive approach to healthcare for older adults aligns with the vision of promoting healthy aging and enhancing the quality of life for older populations. Through the ICOPE program, PHCC seeks to empower older individuals to maintain their independence and well-being for as long as possible, ensuring they receive the appropriate care when needed.

The collaboration between PHCC and Hamad Medical Corporation highlights the importance of a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to caring for older adults. By addressing a range of physical and mental health concerns through the ICOPE program, healthcare providers aim to improve the overall quality of life for elderly patients in Qatar. The integration of specialized services for older adults into primary care settings demonstrates a commitment to holistic and person-centered care that is essential for promoting healthy aging and well-being in older populations.

In conclusion, the launch of the ICOPE services at Leabaib Health Center in Doha, Qatar represents a significant step towards enhancing the healthcare services available to older adults in the country. By focusing on early intervention, comprehensive assessments, and timely interventions, PHCC aims to support older individuals in maintaining their independence and well-being. Through this innovative approach to elderly care, Qatar is setting a precedent for other countries in the region to follow, demonstrating a commitment to promoting healthy aging and ensuring that older populations receive the care and support they need to thrive in their later years.
