The Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU) in Bahrain has been recognized as the Best Bahraini Voluntary Project during the 14th edition of His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa Award for Voluntary Work. This achievement was celebrated during a closing ceremony attended by notable figures such as Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, who commended the DMU team for their innovative approach to educating children about diabetes and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The ceremony also saw the presence of other influential figures in the health and education sectors.
The DMU, established in 2012, is a collaborative effort between RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, Bahrain Diabetes Society, and the Rotary Club of Manama, with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. Through this program, over 6,200 children in Bahrain have been educated about diabetes awareness and empowered to make healthy lifestyle choices. This initiative has been successful in addressing prevalent health challenges in the community and improving the well-being of future generations.
Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, highlighted the significance of this recognition as a testament to the DMU’s efforts over the years in providing education and support to children and families affected by diabetes in Bahrain. He emphasized the university’s dedication to community outreach efforts and research aimed at improving the health and well-being of the Bahraini community.
Chancellor Professor Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the Rotary Club of Manama, praised the tireless efforts of volunteers and the support of partners that have contributed to the success of the DMU.
