Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced the relocation of the Emergency Department at Al Khor Hospital (AKH) to Aisha Bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital (AAH) starting from October 11, 2024. This move is part of the ongoing expansion of AAH, one of HMC’s newest and most advanced hospitals. Over the past few months, services such as pediatric emergency, male physiotherapy, and obstetrics and gynecology have been transferred from AKH and other nearby locations to AAH. The full opening of the Emergency Department at AAH will enable it to receive all patients with emergency conditions from the catchment areas, including Al Khor, Um Salal, and Lusail.

Dr. Ibrahim Fawzy, Medical Director and Acting CEO of AAH, highlighted the importance of the expansion, stating that AAH will now operate three dedicated emergency departments for male, female (including obstetrics and gynecology), and pediatric patients. This will ensure immediate care for life-threatening conditions and improve access to high-quality medical services in the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Jusaiman, CEO of AKH, confirmed that AKH will cease providing emergency medical services from October 11. However, AKH will continue to offer urgent care services for non-critical conditions that cannot wait for a health center appointment.

The urgent care services at AKH will cater to mild respiratory issues, sprains, minor burns and cuts, ear, eye, and throat complaints, as well as fever. On the other hand, AAH, HMC’s second largest hospital, is conveniently located in the Tenbek area near Al Khor and is easily accessible via modern road networks. Patients in need of emergency medical treatment at AAH will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge medical technology, and advanced diagnostic and support services.

With the relocation of emergency services from AKH to AAH, patients may wonder whether they should opt for urgent care or emergency care. Urgent care is suitable for non-critical conditions that require immediate attention, such as mild illnesses or injuries. On the other hand, emergency care is reserved for life-threatening situations that demand prompt medical intervention. It is crucial for patients to understand the difference between urgent care and emergency care and choose the appropriate service based on their medical needs.

The consolidation of emergency services at AAH signifies a strategic move to provide specialized care to patients in northern Doha. The expansion of AAH’s facilities and services will enhance access to high-quality healthcare for residents in Al Khor and neighboring areas. By centralizing emergency care at AAH, HMC aims to streamline medical services and ensure efficient and effective treatment for patients with critical conditions.

In conclusion, the relocation of the Emergency Department from AKH to AAH marks a significant development in HMC’s efforts to enhance healthcare services in Qatar. With the full opening of the Emergency Department at AAH, patients in the catchment areas can expect immediate care for emergency conditions. This move reflects HMC’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical facilities and specialized care to residents in Al Khor and surrounding regions.
