Coco Gauff made history by becoming the first player to win each of their first seven WTA hardcourt finals in the Open Era. She dominated the China Open final against Karolina Muchova with a strong performance, winning 6-1 6-3. Gauff’s impressive victory included 24 winners and added to her previous wins in the Auckland Classic earlier this year and the WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati in 2023 where she also defeated Muchova in the final. Gauff has now won eight out of her nine WTA finals.

In a classy gesture, Gauff congratulated her opponent Muchova, who had recently returned to the tour after an extended absence due to a wrist injury suffered at the 2023 US Open. Gauff praised Muchova as a talented player deserving of success, and she wished her the best for future finals. The tournament marked Gauff’s first event after adding Matt Daly to her coaching team, following her split with Brad Gilbert the previous month. Gauff expressed her gratitude to her team and coach for their support during the tournament.

Heading into the final, Gauff had faced challenges in previous matches, losing the first set in three straight games. However, she demonstrated her determination to reverse the trend by starting strong in the final match. Gauff broke early in the first set, building momentum with efficient service games and an aggressive approach. She secured the first set with an emphatic forehand winner after some initial pressure on her serve.

In the second set, Gauff faced early struggles with her serve, allowing Muchova to break and take a 2-0 lead. However, the American quickly responded by increasing her aggression and breaking back, taking control of the set. Muchova, who had defeated top players in earlier rounds, failed to regain her advantage as Gauff extended her lead. The match ended with Gauff breaking Muchova’s serve on match point, claiming victory in straight sets.

In the women’s doubles final, Paris Olympics gold medallists Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini secured their third WTA Tour title of the year by defeating Chan Hao-Ching and Veronika Kudermetova. The Italian duo showcased their skills and teamwork to win the title in a competitive match. Gauff’s impressive win at the China Open solidifies her reputation as a rising star in the tennis world, showcasing her talent and determination on the court.

Overall, Coco Gauff’s success at the China Open final highlights her dominance in WTA hardcourt tournaments and her ability to perform at the highest level. With her remarkable record of winning all her first seven hardcourt finals, Gauff continues to make waves in the tennis world as one of the most promising young talents. Her victory against Muchova and her gracious words towards her opponent demonstrate her sportsmanship and respect for fellow players. As Gauff continues to evolve in her career with a new coaching team by her side, her future in tennis looks bright, and she is undoubtedly a player to watch in the coming years.
