Martine Grael, a Brazilian sailing star with two Olympic gold medals, is not content to rest on her past achievements. Instead, she is setting sail for new horizons as the first female driver in SailGP, the world’s most thrilling sailing competition. The upcoming 2024-2025 season will see her debut with the newly-formed Mubadala Team Brazil, competing alongside male counterparts in a global circuit spanning continents. The season is set to begin with the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix on November 23 and 24, featuring high-speed action aboard F50 foiling catamarans.

As the daughter of Olympic sailing legend Torben Grael, Martine comes from a family deeply rooted in sailing history. However, she is determined to carve out her own legacy and be a trailblazer for women in the sport. Reflecting on her SailGP debut, Martine sees it as an opportunity to make a significant impact and create her own legacy through results rather than just words. With a focus on creating a more prominent role for female athletes in racing, she aims to inspire the next generation of sailors.

Leading a young team in one of the most competitive sailing leagues in the world presents challenges for Martine. Her main goal is to race cleanly, avoid penalties, and stay out of trouble in the early part of the season. Building a successful team requires trust, communication, and mutual respect, qualities that Martine and her team have been working on intensively. Despite the steep learning curve in SailGP, she is prepared to put in the work and study hard to master the fast-paced, tactical racing atmosphere.

Martine’s excitement about the opportunity to compete in SailGP is evident as she views it as a cool project and a platform to push herself to be a better sailor. As Brazil prepares to host its first SailGP event in May 2025, Martine hopes to inspire more Brazilians to pursue sailing as a career. With a focus on building a connection with fans globally, Martine is eager to engage with sailing enthusiasts and showcase the possibilities for young sailors to achieve their dreams.

Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 SailGP season, Martine remains focused on leading her team through the challenges they will face. She is confident in their ability to improve with each race and is fully committed to making the project work in the long term. As she prepares to make history not just as a sailor but as a leader and role model, Martine aims to show future generations that there are no limits to what they can achieve. With the world watching, Martine Grael is ready to tackle the challenges ahead and pave the way for a new era in sailing.
