E-scooters have become a popular mode of transportation in Dubai, offering a convenient and cost-effective way for residents to travel short distances. However, the ban on e-scooters inside Dubai Metro and Tram earlier this year raised safety concerns, leading to their temporary suspension. The ban was lifted on October 4 with restrictions in place to ensure the safety of passengers and commuters.

Residents like JA Padua and Gemma Asuncion welcomed the decision, as it allows them to resume using their e-scooters for their daily commute. Padua, who lives near Al Furjan Metro Station, is relieved that he can avoid the long walk or taxi ride to his office in Jumeirah Lake Towers by simply hopping on his e-scooter. Asuncion, on the other hand, is pleased that she can save money by using her reliable e-scooter instead of taking a taxi to work.

Transportation and tech experts also support the move, emphasizing the importance of having an efficient transport system that accommodates newer modes of transportation. E-scooters are widely promoted as first- and last-mile green mobility solutions, making them an integral part of the city’s transport network. The restrictions imposed on the size, weight, and usage of e-scooters inside the Metro and Tram aim to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for all passengers.

Dr Mostafa Al Dah, a traffic safety researcher, commended the authorities for updating the regulations on e-scooters, stating that these devices play a vital role in the city’s transport system. He hopes that the new rules will ease the commute for thousands of people who rely on e-scooters for their daily travel needs. Italian expat and tech journalist Simone Majocchi also supported the decision to lift the ban, stressing the importance of providing people with last-mile transportation solutions.

Majocchi highlighted the need for safer and more reliable batteries in e-scooters to prevent accidents such as spontaneous combustion. He recommended using LiFePO4 batteries, known for their safety and longevity compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. As the cooler season approaches, the risk of battery overheating decreases, providing a safer environment for e-scooter users. Majocchi advised owners to be cautious when charging their e-scooters, avoiding leaving them unattended during the charging process.

Overall, the lifting of the ban on e-scooters inside Dubai Metro and Tram signals a positive development for commuters and residents who rely on these devices for their daily travel needs. With stricter regulations in place and a focus on safety, e-scooter users can now enjoy the convenience and efficiency of this mode of transportation while ensuring a smooth and secure journey within the city. As e-scooters continue to gain popularity, it is essential to prioritize safety measures and technological advancements to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
