The aviation authority in India recently approved the merger of AIX Connect (formerly known as AirAsia) into Air India Express. This merger took effect on October 1, 2024, with all aircraft from AIXC seamlessly transferred onto Air India Express’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This move ensures continuity in airline operations and aims to provide a safe and smooth experience for passengers. The Director General of Civil Aviation, Vikram Dev Dutt, lauded the successful merger as a benchmark for future airline consolidations, emphasizing the importance of regulatory oversight in the aviation industry.

The DGCA’s rigorous review of the merger process ensures that it serves the public interest by promoting safe air operations and enhancing the overall travel experience for consumers. By integrating aircraft, pilots, cabin crew, operational systems, maintenance procedures, and other components, the merger presents a complex endeavor. The DGCA played a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with safety requirements and overseeing the seamless integration of both airlines.

To prevent disruptions that typically occur during such transitions, the DGCA engaged with stakeholders and facilitated extensive discussions to establish a smooth procedure for compliance. A dedicated project team was formed to oversee the merger, focusing on regulatory approvals and the transfer of aircraft and personnel in a timely manner. The alignment of facilities, procedures, and fleet assets across various locations was essential for the successful merger.

The DGCA’s evaluation of personnel needs in the merged airline ensured proper training and distribution to meet the demands of the expanded fleet. Additionally, they reviewed agreements and documents related to aircraft leases and insurance to comply with both domestic and international aviation regulations. To monitor progress effectively, a live tracker was created to enable real-time monitoring and facilitate continuous review by the airline’s senior management.

Post-merger operations will be closely monitored by the DGCA to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory conditions, protecting consumer interests and maintaining the safety standards of air operations in India. This merger sets an example for future consolidations in the industry, showcasing the importance of regulatory oversight and strategic planning in ensuring a seamless transition and operational efficiency. By prioritizing safety and consumer experience, the merger of AIX Connect and Air India Express paves the way for a more resilient and innovative airline capable of competing effectively in the global market.
