Apple has recently unveiled its much-anticipated iPhone 16 lineup along with its new operating software, iOS 18. This latest update, which was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in June, boasts several innovative features aimed at enhancing the user experience on Apple devices. Some of the key features of iOS 18 include Rich Communication Services messaging, new Home Screen organisation options, a customisable Control Centre, and the headline feature, Apple Intelligence.
One of the most highlighted features of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, which encompasses a range of new AI features aimed at providing users with a more personalised experience. However, not all of these features will be available right away, as Apple plans to roll out additional Apple Intelligence features in subsequent updates. Some of the notable features of Apple Intelligence include Image Playground, Genmoji for customised emojis, Siri enhancements, and on-screen awareness. The company is taking a slow approach to AI integration, with some features not expected to be available until 2025.
Abhinav Purohit, a strategy consultant specialising in ICT, believes that AI is the standout announcement of iOS 18. He emphasises that Apple is venturing into generative AI with its Apple Intelligence features, offering users a range of new AI-powered tools and functionalities. These features include Image Playground, Genmoji, new writing tools, AI-generated photo memory movies, and improvements to Siri. Purohit sees Apple’s entry into AI as a positive development for end users, with more innovative functions expected in the future.
iOS 18 also introduces advanced safety features to enhance device security and prevent fraud, particularly in the areas of face ID and digital payments. The update offers additional customisation features, such as the ability to customise the Home Screen, lock, and hide apps. Purohit notes that while these features are a welcome addition, some Android devices have offered similar functionalities for years, indicating that Apple is catching up with competitors in this regard.
In terms of device compatibility, iOS 18 will be available on all devices that support iOS 17, with the exception of some models that will not receive the new Apple Intelligence features. Only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with all iPhone 16 devices, will have access to the AI features. The update also brings several key features such as scheduled messaging, satellite messaging, customisable Control Centre layouts, a redesigned Photos app, personalised emojis with Genmoji, and enhanced Siri interactions.
Overall, iOS 18 marks a significant step forward for Apple in the realm of AI and device customisation. The update introduces a range of innovative features that aim to enhance user experiences and provide more personalised functionalities. With Apple Intelligence, users can expect a host of new AI-powered tools and features designed to make their interactions with Apple devices more seamless and intuitive. As Apple continues to innovate and improve its offerings, users can look forward to more enhancements and advancements in the AI era.
