Tadej Pogacar has cemented his status as cycling’s biggest star with a solo attack to win the men’s road race at the UCI 2024 Road World Championships in Zurich. The three-time Tour de France champion surged ahead just over 50 kilometers from the end of the race, crossing the finish line 34 seconds ahead of Australian Ben O’Connor and 58 clear of defending champion Mathieu van der Poel. Pogacar’s victory was emotional, and he expressed his disbelief at his incredible achievement. This win adds to his already impressive season, which includes victories at the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic, and the Strade Bianche.

Pogacar was joined by teammate Primož Roglič on the road but did not need his help as he made a solo breakaway 100 kilometers out from the finish. Despite efforts from the peloton to catch him, led by Van der Poel and Evenepoel, Pogacar maintained his lead and dropped Sivakov to secure the win. The 26-year-old Slovenian completed the challenging 274-kilometer route from Winterthur to Zurich in 6 hours, 27 minutes, and 30 seconds. This victory marks a significant milestone in Pogacar’s career, as he now holds titles from the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and the UCI Road World Championships in the same year.

The win at the world championships was a dream come true for Pogacar, who had not initially set out to win the rainbow jersey. However, after a flawless season, claiming the world championship became a big goal for him. The victory was a culmination of years of hard work and dedication, with Pogacar expressing his disbelief at what had just happened. He credited his success to never giving up and seizing the opportunity to make a decisive move during the race. Pogacar’s winning solo attack mirrored his previous victories at the Tour de France and other prestigious races, showcasing his strength and dominance in the sport.

Pogacar’s victory at the UCI 2024 Road World Championships solidifies his position as cycling’s biggest star, with his name now synonymous with success and domination in the sport. His rare triple crown of winning the Tour, Giro, and world championship in the same year is a remarkable achievement that cements his place in cycling history. The Slovenian rider’s emotional reaction to winning the rainbow jersey demonstrates the significance of this victory in his career, showing his passion and dedication to the sport. With his impressive performances throughout the season, Pogacar has proven himself as a force to be reckoned with on the road.

The world championships victory adds another prestigious title to Pogacar’s already illustrious career, with the Slovenian rider now considered one of the greatest cyclists of his generation. His ability to deliver under pressure and execute decisive moves in races highlights his racing intelligence and strategic prowess. Pogacar’s partnership with teammate Roglič and breakaway with Sivakov showcased his tactical skills and strength as a solo rider. The world championship win further cements Pogacar’s place as a cycling legend, with fans and experts alike hailing him as the new face of the sport. With his talent, determination, and unwavering focus, Pogacar is poised to continue his dominance on the road for years to come.
