The Jeddah International Market, one of the oldest markets in the governorate, was devastated by a huge blaze that broke out early Sunday morning. Two firefighters from the Civil Defense lost their lives while battling the flames. The fire, which started at around 6:00 am in the famous commercial complex located close to Madinah Road in Al-Rawdah district, was eventually extinguished after nearly 14 hours of firefighting efforts. The tragic deaths of Akram Jumaa Al-Johni and Abdullah Manahi Al-Subaie were caused by suffocation inside the burned area, due to the intensity of the flames and the lack of ventilation.

More than 20 firefighting and rescue units from Jeddah and Makkah responded to the scene to help contain the rapidly spreading flames that engulfed most parts of the market. The Civil Defense personnel were successful in bringing the fire under control and began cooling operations at the site to ensure there were no remnants of fire under the rubble. The fire caused the collapse of facades at gates number 1 and 4 of the market, with reports indicating that it started at gate 4 before spreading to other areas. Security authorities immediately arrived at the scene, closed surrounding streets, and imposed a security cordon around the market to prevent further damage.

The Jeddah International Market, which opened in 1981, is a well-known shopping destination in the region, boasting shops selling a variety of goods such as perfumes, watches, jewelry, clothing, electronics, and more. Additionally, the market houses boutiques and restaurants, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The devastating fire resulted in the loss of many shops and stalls within the market, impacting the livelihoods of vendors and business owners. The market’s historical significance and role as a hub for commerce and culture in the region make the tragedy even more heartbreaking for the community.

The tragic deaths of the two firefighters, Akram Jumaa Al-Johni and Abdullah Manahi Al-Subaie, serve as a reminder of the risks that first responders face while carrying out their duties to protect lives and property. Their sacrifice in the line of duty is a testament to their courage and dedication to serving the community. The Civil Defense personnel’s swift response and tireless efforts to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and response in such critical situations. The community mourns the loss of these brave individuals and stands together in solidarity during this difficult time.

In the aftermath of the fire, authorities are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage to the market. Efforts are being made to support affected vendors and business owners, as well as to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The resilience and unity of the community in facing this tragedy demonstrate the strength and compassion of the people of Jeddah in overcoming challenges. While the loss of the Jeddah International Market is a significant blow, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and preparedness in protecting valuable assets and ensuring the well-being of all residents.
