British actress Kate Winslet attended the New York screening of “Lee” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 25, 2024. In the film Lee, Winslet portrays the real-life World War Two photographer Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, a role that she felt a deep connection to. As a co-producer of the film, Winslet found parallels between herself and Miller, particularly in terms of determination and resilience.

Winslet recalled moments of doubt and insecurity during the development of the film, where she questioned her ability to portray Miller. However, these moments ultimately brought her closer to understanding the photojournalist. Asking herself “what would Lee do?” became a guiding principle for Winslet in embodying Miller’s character on screen.

Lee is currently showing in UAE cinemas, telling the story of Miller’s transformation from an American model in New York to a war photographer for Vogue magazine during World War Two. Miller’s work included covering the Blitz, German bombing campaigns, military operations, and the aftermath of concentration camps. Her pioneering work as a female war correspondent solidified her place in history.

Antony Penrose, Miller’s son, played a crucial role in preserving his mother’s legacy by discovering her forgotten work, including 60,000 negatives and prints stashed in the attic of their family home. Penrose’s biography on Miller, titled The Lives of Lee Miller, served as the inspiration for the film Lee. Winslet expressed her gratitude towards Penrose for allowing her to bring Miller’s story to life on screen.

Despite initial challenges and doubts, Winslet felt a sense of pride in portraying Miller and bringing her story to a wider audience. In moments of uncertainty, Winslet drew strength from the idea of honoring Miller’s legacy and making her son proud. Through her dedication to embodying Miller’s character, Winslet hopes to shed light on the remarkable work and legacy of this groundbreaking photojournalist.
