Andrew Scott, known for his roles in Fleabag and Ripley, will be bringing his one-man adaptation of Uncle Vanya to Off-Broadway this spring. The Hollywood Reporter announced that this American premiere will feature Scott portraying every character in the classic Chekhov play. With a successful run in London’s West End and a filmed live version, the production is set to wow audiences in New York starting on March 11, 2025, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The limited eight-week run will allow fans to witness Scott’s ambitious performance in one of Chekhov’s most beloved works.

Scott collaborated with Simon Stephens, Rosanna Vize, and Sam Yates in adapting Uncle Vanya. The play follows the story of an ageing professor and his young wife visiting a rural estate managed by Vanya and his niece, Sonya. Family dynamics clash, tensions rise, and romance entangles the characters, leading to a plan to sell the estate that has supported the professor’s lifestyle. This production will be the second adaptation of Uncle Vanya to come to New York following the Lincoln Center’s Broadway revival starring Steve Carrell and William Jackson Harper.

Andrew Scott’s stage experience includes roles in West End productions of Hamlet and Sea Wall, with his last appearance on Broadway in 2006’s The Vertical Hour. Through Uncle Vanya, Scott continues to showcase his versatility and commitment to challenging roles. The production will be presented on stage by Wessex Grove, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Kater Gordon, with Wagner Johnson Productions as the executive producers.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre in Manhattan’s West Village, where the performance is set to take place, has been host to several notable productions, including Hold On To Me Darling with Adam Driver, and recent shows Oh Mary! and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea featuring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott. The official opening night for Uncle Vanya is scheduled for March 18, promising an intimate and engaging portrayal of Chekhov’s timeless work.

Fans of Andrew Scott and Chekhov’s classic play should mark their calendars for this limited run, as Scott’s adaptation of Uncle Vanya promises a unique and captivating experience. With a blend of drama, romance, and family dynamics, the production is sure to resonate with audiences in New York. As Scott takes on the challenge of portraying multiple characters on stage, his talent and dedication to the craft are bound to shine through in this exciting Off-Broadway debut.

In conclusion, Andrew Scott’s one-man adaptation of Uncle Vanya offers a fresh and innovative take on Chekhov’s timeless play, promising a memorable theatrical experience for audiences in New York. Scott’s impressive stage credentials and commitment to challenging roles make this production a must-see event. With a talented creative team behind the scenes and a historic venue like the Lucille Lortel Theatre, Uncle Vanya is poised to become a standout production in the spring theater season. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness Andrew Scott’s captivating performance in this intimate and immersive portrayal of Chekhov’s classic work.
