India’s star keeper-batter, Rishabh Pant, has been given time off and rested for a three-match T20 series against Bangladesh, starting on October 6 in Guwahati, India. Pant recently made a comeback to test cricket with a stunning century in Chennai after 21 months, and the decision to rest him is to prepare for the upcoming three-test series against New Zealand in October. Along with Pant, test regulars Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, and Khaleel Ahmed have also been left out of the T20 squad in preparation for the New Zealand series.

In place of the rested players, pacer Mayank Yadav, who performed well in the last season’s Indian Premier League for Lucknow Super Giants, has been called up. India coach Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor for the Giants, played a key role in Yadav’s development and selection. Additionally, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the Zimbabwe T20 series due to injury, has been selected for the squad. Left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma, who scored a maiden T20 hundred against Zimbabwe, also returns to the squad after missing out on the Sri Lanka tour.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who was part of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021, gets his first call-up since then. Pacer Harshit Rana and keeper-batter Jitesh Sharma are also included in the squad. Sanju Samson, a key player in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup winning squad, will take on the role of first-choice keeper-batter in Pant’s absence. The three T20 matches against Bangladesh will be played on October 6, 9, and 12 in Guwahati, Delhi, and Hyderabad, respectively. The squad for the T20 series includes players like Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, and Washington Sundar.

In conclusion, the decision to rest Rishabh Pant and other test regulars for the T20 series against Bangladesh is aimed at preparing for the upcoming test series against New Zealand. The new squad includes promising players like Mayank Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhishek Sharma, and Varun Chakravarthy, who will be looking to make their mark in the T20 format. Sanju Samson will have the opportunity to showcase his skills as the first-choice keeper-batter in Pant’s absence. The three T20 matches will provide an opportunity for the selected players to prove their worth and stake a claim for a spot in the team for future series.
