Qatar pledges an extra $100 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza

The State of Qatar has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees and the vital work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Minister of State for International Cooperation HE Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater represented Qatar at a Ministerial Meeting for Key Partners in Support of UNRWA during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. At the meeting, Her Excellency announced a $100 million pledge to support the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of international solidarity in supporting UNRWA amid challenges imposed by the Israeli government.

Her Excellency highlighted Qatar’s longstanding support for UNRWA and its role as a key provider of life-saving assistance to Palestinian refugees. Qatar was among the first countries to sign the Statement of Shared Commitments on UNRWA, recognizing the agency’s crucial humanitarian work. Her Excellency expressed Qatar’s rejection of efforts to designate UNRWA as a terrorist organization, emphasizing the dangers of such actions. Qatar has consistently increased its donations to UNRWA and signed a multi-year agreement with the agency in 2018, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees.

The current meeting holds significant importance due to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as well as Israeli military operations in the West Bank and recent aggression on Lebanon. Her Excellency emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to address the dire situation in the region and stabilize the situation. Qatar will continue to coordinate with UNRWA to provide humanitarian assistance and support efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people. Qatar’s policy of solidarity with the Palestinian people underscores its commitment to supporting humanitarian causes and promoting stability in the region.
