A ground-breaking initiative was recently announced in Muscat with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Vale and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, aimed at enriching marine ecosystems and boosting local fishery resources. The project involves the production and deployment of 3D Artificial Reefs off the coast of Liwa, utilizing advanced 3D printing technology to create reefs that closely mimic natural coral formations. These artificial reefs will enhance biodiversity, contribute to the sustainable growth of fish populations, and provide long-term benefits to local fishing communities in North Al Batinah Governorate.

The project was announced during the Social Investment Forum and is the first of its kind in the region. The reefs are designed to withstand the dynamic marine environment of North Al Batinah and are expected to significantly improve the health of coastal ecosystems in the area. Abdullah Al Hadabi, Director General of the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources, emphasized the importance of collaboration with Vale in protecting and enhancing Oman’s marine life, ensuring vibrant ecosystems and sustainable pathways for local livelihoods.

Abdullah Al Saadi, Corporate Affairs and Administration Chief at Vale in Oman, highlighted the company’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to community challenges. The introduction of 3D Artificial Reefs in Liwa is a forward-thinking effort that leverages advanced technology for long-lasting benefits, aiming to create a sustainable future for local fishermen and protect marine ecosystems. The project is scheduled to commence within the next month, with full deployment of the reefs expected by the end of the year, providing an immediate boost to the region’s fishery economy.

The artificial reefs are anticipated to increase local fish catch within the first year, ultimately fostering a more diverse and resilient marine ecosystem in North Al Batinah. This will contribute to the sustainable management of marine resources in the area, ensuring long-term benefits for both the environment and local communities. The project represents a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, emphasizing the value of partnership in achieving conservation and economic development goals in Oman.
