The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has seen rapid economic growth and development over the past few decades, with the ocean playing a significant role in its early days through activities like pearl diving and fishing. Today, fishing is not just an economic activity in the Emirates, but also a popular leisure activity. To protect marine diversity, the UAE has implemented laws and regulations to manage fishing practices.

These regulations are designed to end overfishing, prevent illegal and destructive fishing practices, and implement science-based management plans to restore fish stocks. It is mandatory to obtain a fishing license before engaging in recreational fishing in the UAE, regardless of whether it is a hobby or a commercial activity.

In Dubai, the Dubai Municipality issues fishing licenses for residents to fish in specified coastal areas during certain seasons. The license allows fishing in designated areas like Al Mamzar Creek, Jumeirah, and Umm Suqeim beaches. The fishing service is suspended from June to October each year to ensure sustainable consumption of local fish resources.

In Abu Dhabi, residents can apply for weekly or yearly recreational fishing licenses through the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi. The permits are available for citizens, residents, and tourists and allow surf fishing on the emirate’s beaches. The process of obtaining a fishing license in Abu Dhabi involves submitting an online application through the TAMM platform.

Similarly, other emirates like Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Fujairah also have their own processes for obtaining fishing licenses. Each emirate has specific requirements and fees for obtaining a recreational fishing license. The UAE government has also designated certain months for fishing specific species to protect marine life during breeding seasons.

Failure to comply with fishing regulations can result in fines and penalties. Violations such as using prohibited tools and equipment, hunting in restricted areas, and trading in prohibited fish species can lead to fines, license cancellations, and even seizure of materials. It is important for recreational fishers to be aware of the regulations in place to protect marine life and ensure sustainable fishing practices in the UAE.
