Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to embark on a five-day official visit to Uzbekistan, accompanied by a delegation of officials from the Ministry of Finance. Her visit will include attending the Ninth Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Samarkand, as well as important bilateral meetings with counterparts from Uzbekistan, Qatar, China, and the AIIB President.

India, as the second largest shareholder of the AIIB, will have a significant role in the discussions at the Annual Meeting, which will focus on a wide range of global development issues. The AIIB is dedicated to promoting sustainable infrastructure and investments in Asia, with the aim of fostering economic development, creating wealth, and improving infrastructure connectivity.

During her visit, Sitharaman is expected to meet with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and sign a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between India and Uzbekistan. This treaty is designed to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries and promote mutual benefits on a long-term basis. The Finance Minister will also participate in the India-Uzbekistan Business forum discussions, engaging with industry leaders from both nations.

In addition to her official meetings, Sitharaman will visit the Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent. She will also have the opportunity to interact with the Indian diaspora in Uzbekistan, gaining insights from leading voices across various sectors. This visit underscores the growing economic and strategic ties between India and Uzbekistan, as well as India’s active participation in multilateral initiatives like the AIIB.

Overall, Sitharaman’s visit to Uzbekistan highlights India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and fostering economic cooperation with other countries in the region. By participating in important multilateral forums like the AIIB Annual Meeting, India is playing a key role in shaping the development agenda and promoting sustainable growth in Asia. This visit underscores the importance of building strong international relationships and collaborating on initiatives that benefit both nations in the long run.
