The Council of Representatives in Bahrain is gearing up to resume its legislative and oversight activities on October 13 after a four-and-a-half-month recess. With the start of its third session, excitement is building around the upcoming leadership elections within its various committees. Members are currently engaged in consultations and coordination meetings to determine the candidates for key positions, with expectations of significant changes in the committee leadership.

Sources within the Council have indicated that major changes are anticipated in most, if not all, of the committees. The Finance Committee, responsible for overseeing the national budget, is expected to see intense competition for the presidency. MP Mohammed Al Ahmed, who previously led the committee, has announced his intention to run again. However, MP Zainab Abdulameer has reportedly decided not to seek re-election, leaving MP Al Saloum as a potential candidate for the position.

The Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee is also expected to have a contested election, with MP Hassan Bukhmas expressing his intention to run again as the chair. He is likely to face competition from MP Mariam Al Dhaen. The Services Committee has attracted interest from four representatives, with a consensus on rotating the presidency of the Public Utilities and Environment Committee. MP Mohammed Al Balushi is considered a frontrunner for the position.

In terms of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee, there seems to be an agreement that MP Mahmoud Al Fardan will assume the leadership role. This follows a previous rotation between MP Mohsen Al Asaboul and Dr Hisham Al Asheri. Overall, the upcoming leadership elections are expected to bring new faces and ideas to the Council of Representatives, setting the stage for an active and dynamic third session.

As the Secretariat of the Council finalizes its preparations, it is clear that the upcoming leadership elections will shape the direction of the committees moving forward. Members are gearing up for a competitive and potentially transformative process, with various representatives expressing their intentions to run for key positions. With significant changes expected in most committees, the third session of the Council of Representatives promises to be a crucial period for legislative and oversight activities in Bahrain.

With a focus on overseeing the national budget, the Finance Committee is expected to see strong competition for the presidency. MP Mohammed Al Ahmed’s announcement to run again sets the stage for a challenging race, with potential shifts in leadership. Similarly, the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee is poised for a contested election, with MP Hassan Bukhmas and MP Mariam Al Dhaen vying for the chair position. This reflects a broader trend of competitive elections within the various committees.

Overall, the upcoming leadership elections in the Council of Representatives signal a period of change and renewal within Bahrain’s legislative body. With members actively engaging in consultations and coordination meetings, the stage is set for a dynamic and competitive process. As anticipation builds for the October 13 resumption of activities, all eyes will be on the outcomes of the leadership elections and the potential impact on the Council’s operations.
