The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries recently affirmed their commitment to the right to development for children and future generations. In a statement delivered by the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, the GCC countries expressed their belief that removing obstacles hindering the full realization of this right is crucial. They emphasized the importance of distinguishing between children and future generations when developing policies to support their rights, with a focus on fairness and accountability.

The GCC countries consider the right to development as a top priority, viewing it as fundamental to ensuring the full enjoyment of all other human rights. They believe that current generations have a responsibility to future generations, and should work towards their development without impeding their own. Dr. Hind highlighted the need for a proactive approach that includes planning and legislation to support future generations’ rights and involvement in decision-making processes. The GCC countries are dedicated to preserving the rights of future generations in various sectors, including through the implementation of sustainable development initiatives.

In line with their commitment to the right to development, the GCC countries have taken several initiatives to support future generations. These initiatives include the establishment of ministries dedicated to future generations and the creation of the “Future Generations Fund” to ensure economic rights and development opportunities for future generations. The GCC countries are also guided by their national visions for the future, setting long-term plans that prioritize the well-being of future generations and sustainable development.

Dr. Hind reiterated the GCC countries’ belief in the importance of a healthy environment for future generations, emphasizing the need for all components of sustainable development to be considered. By implementing measures recommended by the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development, the GCC countries aim to ensure that the rights of future generations are safeguarded and promoted, both at the decision-making level and through practical initiatives on the ground. The GCC countries are committed to upholding the rights of future generations and creating a future that is equitable, sustainable, and inclusive.

In conclusion, the GCC countries are dedicated to promoting and protecting the right to development for children and future generations. Through proactive measures, such as the establishment of ministries and funds dedicated to future generations, the GCC countries are working towards ensuring a future that is sustainable and equitable. By prioritizing the rights of future generations in their national visions and decision-making processes, the GCC countries are laying the groundwork for a future that supports the well-being and development of all individuals, regardless of age or background.
