Two UAE residents, Rajith Kizhakkekara Neelancheri and his friend Binish Krishnan, have embarked on an extraordinary journey spanning multiple countries and terrains. Their adventurous spirit led them to plan a 13,000km road trip through Iran, Central Asia, and Nepal before reaching their final destination in the south Indian state of Kerala. The duo set off from Abu Shagara in their Toyota 4Runner loaded with essentials, including Kerala-style curries, maps, and repair kits, to ensure a smooth and unforgettable adventure.
The idea for this epic journey was conceived in 2019, with meticulous planning required to obtain visas and permits for the various countries along the route. Special permits, such as the GBAO permit in Tajikistan, were necessary to travel to specific regions. The journey involved crossing numerous checkpoints and required careful documentation to comply with security measures. Despite the challenges, the pair drove continuously throughout the day, stopping at night to rest in hotels or camp in suitable locations.
The adventure began with a visit to Iran, where they explored historical sites and savored Persian cuisine. In Turkmenistan, they witnessed the intriguing Darvaza gas crater, a burning natural gas field drilled by Soviet engineers in 1971. Uzbekistan greeted them with towering mountains and the ancient city of Samarkand, known for its role in the Silk Road. The journey continued through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, where they tackled the Pamir Highway, one of the highest and most dangerous roads in the world, testing their driving skills to the limit.
The road trip was not without challenges, including a tyre puncture on the Pamir highway and a cracked windshield in Turkmenistan. Despite these obstacles, the duo pressed on, seeking repairs where necessary to continue their journey. Kazakhstan provided a welcome break from the challenging mountain roads, allowing them to recuperate before entering China. Crossing into China offered a diverse landscape transformation, from mountains to sand dunes and eventually reaching Tibet with its towering peaks and views of the Himalayan range.
As they navigated the mountain passes of China, the sight of Mount Everest in the distance left them in awe. The journey through multiple countries, each with its own unique landscapes and challenges, culminated in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for Rajith and Binish. Their determination and passion for exploration led them to experience the thrill of a road trip spanning continents and cultures, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
