The Sultanate of Oman has commended the International Atomic Energy Agency’s initiative to utilize nuclear technologies in agriculture and food production to ensure food safety sustainability. This was revealed in Oman’s speech at the IAEA’s 68th General Conference, where Oman expressed its interest in joining this initiative. Yousef Ahmed Al Jabri, the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the IAEA, read out the speech which highlighted the importance of nuclear science and technology in addressing global challenges.

Al Jabri mentioned that Oman signed a technical cooperation framework document with the IAEA for the period of 2024-2029, marking the third mandate of its kind for the Sultanate. The framework covers cooperation programs in various areas such as radiation safety, agriculture, food safety, human health, water resources, environment, and cultural heritage. The first technical cooperation cycle under this framework from 2024-2025 includes projects to combat farm pests, ensure food safety, improve medical radiation practices, and enhance radiation safety infrastructure.

Oman is dedicated to cooperating with the IAEA and member states to achieve the Agency’s goals and strengthen its role in promoting peace and development. Al Jabri expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for hosting a team of Omani experts and specialists from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Sultan Qaboos University to learn from Japanese institutions’ experience in monitoring and controlling viral and human diseases. Additionally, Oman welcomed the accession of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Cook Islands to IAEA membership.

Overall, Oman’s support for the IAEA’s work in utilizing nuclear technology for food safety and agriculture highlights the country’s commitment to innovative solutions for global challenges. By actively participating in cooperation programs and sharing knowledge with other member states, Oman is contributing to the advancement of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development and peace.
