The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the first station of the air taxi project will soon be revealed. The official operation of this station is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026, with the project initially launching four stations. The aim of this ambitious project is to provide a modern and effective means of transportation, serving various areas of the city, including hotels and the airport.
As part of the project, the first phase will include four strategic landing sites at Dubai International Airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. These sites will feature dedicated take-off and landing areas, electric charging facilities, passenger waiting areas, and security procedures. Tyler Trerotola, the general manager of the Middle East at Joby Aviation, stated that the air taxi service is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with operations potentially starting in late 2025.
The air taxi is an innovative electric aircraft that can carry four passengers and a pilot, with a speed of up to 320kmph and a range of up to 160km. It operates quietly and smoothly, emitting minimal sound at less than 45 decibels, reducing noise pollution. This new service is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Dubai, significantly reducing travel time between Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah to just 10-12 minutes, compared to over 45 minutes during peak hours.
The project signifies Dubai’s commitment to sustainable innovation in transportation and showcases the city as a leader in modern technology applications. By reducing reliance on traditional modes of transportation, air taxis aid in lowering carbon emissions and supporting environmental initiatives in the city. Additionally, they offer a convenient and rapid alternative for traversing major points in Dubai, enhancing the overall transportation experience and saving time for commuters.
Air taxis not only mitigate traffic congestion on major roads but also attract visitors and tourists by providing a unique and innovative transportation experience. This, in turn, contributes to boosting the city’s tourism sector and promoting Dubai as a destination that embraces cutting-edge technology. The agreement signed during the World Government Summit in Dubai grants Joby Aviation exclusive rights to operate air taxis in the city for six years, ensuring the success of the service by determining routes, providing infrastructure, and supplying aircraft with the necessary capacity.
