The world’s sky will witness two major astronomical phenomena on Wednesday, September 18, 2024: a partial lunar eclipse and the super moon phenomenon. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth’s shadow blocks the sunlight reflected from the moon. There are three types of eclipses: total, partial, and penumbral. The partial lunar eclipse will begin at 6:12 AM local time in Oman, peak at 6:44 AM, and end at 7:15 AM, with the penumbral eclipse ending at 8:47 AM. Unfortunately, residents of Oman will not be able to see the lunar eclipse as the moon will set before the partial eclipse begins.

The super moon phenomenon occurs when the moon is full and located near the closest point in its orbit around the Earth. The moon’s orbit is elliptical, so its distance from the Earth varies. When the moon is at its closest point (perigee), it appears larger and brighter than usual. The super moon will be visible after sunset at the eastern horizon, with the moon appearing about 15% larger and 30% brighter than normal. Its color will be reddish or orange due to dust and other particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The best time to observe and photograph the super moon is at sunset. To provide an opportunity for the public to witness this unique phenomenon, the Omani Astronomical Society will organize a public observation event at its headquarters in the city of Al Irfan in the Wilayat of Seeb. This event will allow individuals to experience the giant moon’s distinctive size and exceptional brightness in an educational and interactive atmosphere.

The Director of Astronomical Projects at the Oman Astronomical Society explained that although residents of Oman will not be able to see the lunar eclipse, many regions around the world, including Africa, Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia, will have visibility of the phenomenon. He highlighted that the lunar eclipse is an intriguing astronomical event that occurs when the Earth’s shadow obstructs the sunlight reflected from the moon.

Both the partial lunar eclipse and the super moon phenomenon are extraordinary events that offer a unique opportunity to witness the beauty and wonder of the universe. Whether observing the eclipse from different regions across the globe or attending the public observation event organized by the Omani Astronomical Society, individuals have the chance to connect with the celestial world in a memorable and enlightening way. Don’t miss out on the chance to witness these incredible astronomical events and be a part of something truly remarkable.
