Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, has called for an end to social security benefits for Ukrainian male refugees in the EU, stating that it encourages draft dodging in Ukraine. During the Yalta European Strategy forum in Kyiv, Sikorski emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s war effort by denying financial incentives for avoiding the draft. He pointed to recent airspace violations by Russian drones in NATO members’ territory as evidence of the need to strengthen defense efforts against Russia.

On September 8th, Romania and Latvia reported incidents of Russian drones violating their airspace, with one crashing in Latvia and another flying into Romania during attacks on Ukraine. The Romanian Ministry of National Defence deployed F-16 warplanes to monitor its airspace, while Latvia’s Defence Minister noted that the drone likely came from neighboring Belarus. Sikorski stressed the importance of preventing such violations by redirecting financial resources towards defense measures, benefiting both Ukraine and Europe.

Sikorski also highlighted the risk of Russian drones targeting Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, particularly the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility. He warned of the potential consequences of a nuclear accident in Ukraine, impacting the entire continent. The plant has faced threats of Russian attacks, with recent artillery shelling causing damage to its power access. Ending financial aid to Ukrainian men, Sikorski argued, would save countries like the Netherlands and Germany billions of euros, redirecting funds towards strengthening the protection of Ukrainian power plants.

Despite Russia’s military advantage over Ukraine in terms of soldiers and weapons, Ukraine has taken steps to bolster its defense capabilities. Earlier this year, Ukraine lowered the call-up age for combat duty to 25 from 27 to expedite mobilization into the army. Sikorski emphasized that supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts should take precedence over providing social security benefits to Ukrainian men, urging EU governments to take action to deter draft dodging and enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

In conclusion, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski’s call to end social security benefits for Ukrainian male refugees in the EU is rooted in the desire to prevent draft dodging in Ukraine and strengthen defense efforts against Russia. By redirecting financial resources towards defense measures, EU governments can support Ukraine’s war effort and protect critical infrastructure such as nuclear power plants. Ending financial aid to Ukrainian men would not only save billions of euros for other purposes but also contribute to enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the face of ongoing threats. As Ukraine continues to face challenges from Russia, the international community must prioritize supporting its defense efforts to ensure stability and security in the region.
