The coal production in India saw a significant increase during the fiscal year 2024-25, with a total production reaching 411.62 million tonnes by September 12, 2024, marking a 5.85 per cent growth compared to the previous year. Despite facing challenges such as adverse climatic conditions, the coal sector demonstrated remarkable resilience and achieved significant production milestones. Coal India Limited (CIL), a key player in the industry, reported a production of 311 million tonnes during the same period, reflecting a growth rate of 2.80 per cent. This growth is attributed to the sector’s commitment to meeting the country’s increasing energy demands.
In addition to the rise in production, coal dispatch also saw an improvement during the fiscal year 2024-25, reaching 442.24 million tonnes by September 12, 2024. This reflects a growth of 4.97 per cent compared to the same period last year. The ministry highlighted the increase in coal supply to power plants, which rose by 4.03 per cent to 362.65 million tonnes. This indicates the coal sector’s crucial role in ensuring an uninterrupted power supply and meeting India’s energy needs.
As of September 12, 2024, the coal stock held by coal companies increased to 76.49 million tonnes, showing a remarkable growth of 49.07 per cent compared to the previous year. Similarly, domestic coal-based thermal power plants reported a coal stock of 36.58 million tonnes, marking a growth of 43.68 per cent. The ministry emphasized that these statistics demonstrate the dedication and resilience of the coal sector in advancing the country’s energy security.
