Showering after Physical Education (PE) classes in schools has become less common in recent decades, but health advocates in the UAE emphasize the importance of developing a regular post-exercise shower routine to instill discipline and encourage lifelong habits of cleanliness and self-care in students. Factors such as privacy concerns, changes in societal norms regarding personal hygiene, and non-availability of facilities have led to a decline in this trend. However, medics advise that all UAE schools with PE curriculum should promote washing up, preferably taking a shower, or at least changing clothes after PE lessons.

The practice of showering after physical activity was common from the 1940s through the 1980s in many regions but has since decreased. Some countries like Japan and South Korea still encourage students to shower after PE classes. However, in modern-day schools, issues such as body shaming, bullying, and cultural or religious concerns have led to the recommendation for students to shower at home instead of at school. Principals in Indian-curriculum schools often mention that the timetable only allows for a brief cool-down or cleanup period after PE classes.

Hygiene education is essential for students as physical activity can lead to sweating and the build-up of bacteria on the skin. Therefore, doctors stress the importance of encouraging students to change clothes and freshen up even if showering is not mandatory. Developing a routine for personal hygiene helps students take responsibility for their health and well-being, including practices like washing hands regularly and maintaining clean clothing. Educating students on hygiene and proper showering techniques is crucial, and schools should integrate hygiene education into their curriculum.

Healthcare professionals emphasize the role of parents in reinforcing good hygiene practices at home, especially after physical activities. Showering after PE classes is vital for several reasons, including washing away sweat, bacteria, and dirt to reduce the risk of skin infections and unpleasant odors. Regular showers can prevent clogged pores, skin irritation, and promote skin health. Additionally, showering after physical activity helps soothe tired muscles, improve circulation, and reduce the risk of soreness or stiffness after intense PE sessions. It is also beneficial for boosting self-confidence and maintaining personal hygiene in vulnerable areas prone to bacterial and fungal growth.
