Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is a well-known leader in the UAE today, serving as the Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai. However, his journey to leadership began long before, as he was once the world’s youngest Minister of Defence. A recent 10-minute documentary sheds light on his training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in the UK, describing it as “prison-like” and showcasing the rigorous experience that shaped the young Arab officer.

Released on the 20th anniversary of The Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Leadership Development, the documentary features three of Sheikh Mohammed’s original training officers, who share inspiring anecdotes of his time at the academy. Despite being promised “no special treatment”, Sheikh Mohammed displayed exceptional skills, such as hitting a target from 800 meters away, stunning his officers and fellow cadets with his natural talent and discipline.

The film highlights the reunion of Sheikh Mohammed with his trainers from 1968, showing the lasting impact of his training on his leadership journey. It emphasizes his essence and determination, qualities that led him to become the youngest Minister of Defence in the world. Through anecdotes and interviews with historians and officers, the documentary paints a vivid picture of Sheikh Mohammed’s training and character.

One remarkable incident shared in the film involves Sheikh Mohammed leading a platoon in a challenging exercise where cadets were dropped in the Brecon Beacons and hunted down by enemy soldiers. Despite the tough conditions, Sheikh Mohammed showcased his leadership abilities and strategic thinking, emerging as one of the few cadets who evaded capture. His dedication and resilience were evident throughout his training, preparing him for the responsibilities of leadership.

The documentary also reveals the support Sheikh Mohammed received from his trainers, who recognized his potential and leadership qualities. Col David Brooks described Sheikh Mohammed as the best officer cadet, a recognition that led to him being appointed as the first overseas cadet under-officer at Mons. This achievement highlighted his exceptional performance and commitment to excellence during his training.

In conclusion, the documentary provides a rare glimpse into Sheikh Mohammed’s early years and the formative experiences that shaped his leadership style. It showcases his dedication, skills, and unwavering determination to excel, setting the foundation for his future success. Through storytelling and interviews, the film captures the essence of Sheikh Mohammed’s training, highlighting the key moments and challenges that paved the way for his remarkable journey to becoming a visionary leader.
