Saudi Arabia emphasized the significance of regional and international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges at the 26th session of ministers of environment of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states in Doha, Qatar. Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Al-Mushaiti highlighted the importance of rehabilitating degraded lands, increasing the resilience of communities and ecosystems to drought, preserving natural resources and biodiversity, and achieving sustainability. Al-Mushaiti urged GCC countries to ratify the Middle East Green Initiative Charter and include national targets for planting trees and rehabilitating lands within the initiative. He also called for enhanced support from national development funds in the GCC countries for vegetation development projects and emphasized the importance of continued support for the Middle East Green Initiative.

The outcomes of the meeting of the Council’s ministers are expected to advance environmental protection, adaptation to climate change, and mitigation of its effects to achieve sustainable development goals in the region. Al-Mushaiti expressed optimism that Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the COP16 conference in Riyadh in December will lead to a significant shift in international efforts to reduce land degradation and the impacts of drought. He emphasized the need for active participation from all stakeholders, including GCC countries, states parties, international and regional organizations, the private sector, and civil society in the conference activities in order to effectively address the challenges.

The Middle East Green Initiative Charter plays a crucial role in guiding the efforts of GCC countries towards environmental conservation and sustainability. By ratifying the charter and setting national targets for reforestation and land rehabilitation, GCC countries can contribute to regional and global efforts to combat climate change and protect natural resources. The active involvement of national development funds in supporting vegetation development projects will be essential in achieving the goals of the Middle East Green Initiative and promoting environmental resilience in the region.

By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors, including governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society, the conference aims to foster collaboration and drive meaningful action towards reducing land degradation and mitigating the impacts of drought. Through active participation and shared responsibility, GCC countries can play a vital role in shaping the global environmental agenda and advancing sustainable development goals in the region.
