Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step towards preserving its geological heritage and promoting sustainable development with the endorsement of the nomination of North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The announcement was made at the ninth session of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council held in Vietnam, with the final decision expected at the UNESCO General Conference in March 2025. The Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover Development & Combating Desertification (NCVC) and the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science highlighted the rigorous criteria used to select the two sites, including comprehensive management of geologically significant areas and engagement of local communities.

The endorsement of North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving and developing sites of global geological importance. This nomination represents a major step towards international recognition of these geologically significant sites and showcases the Kingdom’s efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable development. If granted final approval, the number of UNESCO Global Geoparks will reach 228 in 49 countries, further solidifying Saudi Arabia’s position on the international stage in terms of geological heritage preservation.

Dr. Khaled Al-Abdulkader, CEO of NCVC, emphasized the significance of this achievement in protecting the Kingdom’s unique natural environment and vegetation, contributing directly to the goals of the Vision 2030 Sustainable Development Program through the concept of geoparks. Secretary General of the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, Ahmed Alblihed, highlighted the potential global awareness this nomination will bring to the Kingdom’s geological heritage and its leading role in protecting natural sites and developing local communities. This recognition further cements Saudi Arabia’s position as a key player in global geo-tourism, aligning with Vision 2030’s goals of economic diversification and environmental sustainability.

North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark are globally significant geological sites, boasting a unique geological diversity that reflects millions of years of geological history. These sites offer visitors the opportunity to explore the Kingdom’s unique geological heritage, fostering scientific and cultural understanding of the importance of preserving geological diversity. Additionally, the geoparks enable Saudi Arabia to showcase a pioneering model of sustainable natural resource management that integrates ecotourism with local development, creating job opportunities and providing educational resources for local communities. This collaborative effort between the public, private, and non-profit sectors contributes to achieving sustainable development goals at both national and international levels.

Saudi Arabia’s commitment to international environmental protection efforts and raising environmental awareness is further demonstrated through the endorsement of North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. These geologically significant sites represent a major milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to preserve its unique geological heritage and promote sustainable development. The nomination of these sites not only highlights Saudi Arabia’s dedication to environmental conservation but also elevates its international standing in terms of geological heritage preservation and sustainable development practices.
