Getting married in Abu Dhabi? Know that genetic testing is now a mandatory part of the premarital screening programme as announced by the Department of Health. This service will be offered in 22 primary care centres across Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain, with results issued within 14 days. The test helps couples identify if they are carriers of shared genetic mutations that could be passed on to their children, causing preventable genetic diseases. The comprehensive screening tests for 570 genes contributing to over 840 genetic disorders.

Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Centre at DoH, highlighted that the aim of this step is to prevent genetic diseases and provide early intervention through diagnostic processes, genetic counselling, and reproductive medicine solutions. Common genetic disorders can lead to various health issues in children, including vision and hearing loss, blood clotting disorders, developmental delays, organ failure, hormonal imbalances, and seizures, among others. The pilot phase of the initiative supported over 800 couples in making informed health decisions before marriage, with 86 percent achieving genetic compatibility and only 14 percent requiring additional intervention based on genetic results.

Genetic testing plays a crucial role in identifying carriers of genetic mutations and preventing the transmission of genetic diseases to future generations. By making genetic testing mandatory for couples getting married in Abu Dhabi, the Department of Health aims to create a healthier population by minimizing the prevalence of genetic disorders. The availability of this service in primary care centres will ensure easy access for residents across different regions of Abu Dhabi, enhancing awareness and encouraging informed decision-making regarding genetic health.

The initiative not only focuses on identifying genetic risks but also provides couples with the necessary support and guidance to navigate through the implications of the screening results. By offering genetic counselling and reproductive medicine solutions, the Department of Health aims to empower couples to make informed decisions about their future family planning. Through early intervention and tailored medical solutions, the initiative seeks to improve the overall health outcomes for families in Abu Dhabi, ensuring a healthier and genetically compatible next generation.

With the support of genetic testing, couples can make informed decisions about their health and future family planning, reducing the chances of passing on genetic disorders to their children. The prevention of genetic diseases through premarital genetic screening not only benefits individual families but also contributes to the overall well-being of society. By promoting genetic health and supporting preventive measures, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health is taking proactive steps towards creating a healthier and genetically diverse population, setting a positive example for other regions to follow. The mandatory genetic testing initiative reflects a commitment to proactive healthcare strategies that prioritize prevention and early intervention for better health outcomes.
