Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a serious illness that can have severe consequences if not properly managed. Doctors compare the effects of severe influenza to the feeling of “being hit by a truck,” emphasizing the seriousness of the condition. Dr Walid Abuhammour, from Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, highlighted the importance of recognizing the severity of influenza during the launch of the annual national seasonal influenza awareness campaign. Despite the misconception that the flu is just a simple cold, it can lead to severe illness, hospitalization, and even death, especially among high-risk groups.
Seasonal influenza is highly contagious and can easily spread through coughing or sneezing, making vaccination the most effective method for prevention. Medical experts stress the importance of staying up to date with the latest news and following health guidelines to protect oneself and others. Dr Walid pointed out that approximately 4 million people worldwide suffer from severe influenza each year, with hospital treatment costs being significant. He urged individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or severe symptoms to seek prompt medical attention to avoid complications such as pneumonia or sepsis.
Vaccination plays a key role in preventing the spread of seasonal influenza, particularly in crowded places like schools and nursing homes. The virus can be transmitted through respiratory droplets in the air or contaminated hands, highlighting the importance of personal hygiene practices such as covering the mouth and nose when coughing and frequent handwashing. In temperate climates, flu outbreaks are more common during the winter, while in tropical regions, sporadic outbreaks can occur throughout the year. The incubation period for the flu typically ranges from one to four days.
Dr Abdullah Al Rasasi, from the Dubai Health Authority, emphasized the importance of vaccination in enhancing prevention and reducing complications associated with the flu. The DHA is committed to supporting national campaigns to promote public health and community well-being. Al Rasasi announced plans to implement programs and activities to educate the public about the benefits of vaccination and preventive measures against various diseases, including seasonal influenza. By working together, health authorities and the community can ensure a healthier and safer environment for everyone.
