Returning to school after a long break can be challenging for many children, as they may experience what psychologists call ‘Back-to-School Syndrome’. This syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as physical exhaustion, trouble sleeping, irritability, and anxiety. In a recent case, 10-year-old Sami Abdel displayed these symptoms after returning from a vacation in Egypt. Despite usually being excited to go back to school, Sami showed little interest in activities and had trouble sleeping, causing concern for his mother, Sara.
After consulting with a psychologist, Sara learned that Sami’s symptoms were typical for children transitioning back to school after an extended break. The doctors recommended relaxation techniques, open communication, and counselling to help Sami adjust to school life. Similarly, 8-year-old Khaled El-Sayed experienced headaches, stomach aches, and anxiety upon returning to school, leading to frequent absences. Medical tests ruled out physical illness, suggesting stress and anxiety as the cause of Khaled’s issues. To help him, cognitive-behavioural therapy and relaxation techniques were introduced.
Dr Adnan Ahmadiazad, a specialist psychiatrist, explained that ‘Back-to-School Syndrome’ often manifests as both physical and emotional symptoms in children aged 6 to 17. The mental and physical strain associated with returning to a structured school environment can lead to various symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, anxiety, irritability, and sadness. To help children cope with the stress of going back to school, doctors recommend open communication, establishing a structured daily routine, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and limiting screen time.
Dr Sherif Mohamed Mosaad Kamel, a consultant paediatrician, emphasized the importance of a support system involving parents, teachers, and schools in helping children through ‘Back-to-School Syndrome’. Maintaining open communication, discussing feelings and anxieties, setting realistic goals, and seeking professional help if needed are essential strategies to support children through this transition. Recognizing the signs of ‘Back-to-School Syndrome’ early and taking proactive steps can help children navigate the challenges of returning to school and ensure a positive learning experience.
