In recent times, several schools in the UAE have introduced pet-friendly policies, allowing domestic animals on campus. These schools believe that having animals on the premises can have a positive impact on student mental health by creating a calming environment that reduces anxiety, alleviates stress, and enhances overall well-being. School leaders have highlighted the therapeutic effect of interacting with animals, promoting joy and relaxation among students, especially younger learners. The presence of animals fosters empathy, responsibility, and a sense of calm, offering a unique opportunity for children to connect with nature.

Some schools have organized events where they bring in farm animals, birds, and other pets, providing students with the chance to pet and feed the animals. These sessions are closely monitored to ensure the safety of both the students and the animals, with professional handlers assisting in the process. Adherence to guidelines and permission from regulatory authorities are required to organize such events, ensuring a secure and enriching experience for everyone involved. Principals have noted that the presence of animals can make students feel calm, happy, and relaxed, providing a sense of comfort, especially for younger children.

Schools like The Aquila School and Aspen Heights British School have various animals on campus, such as rabbits, parrots, fishes, and dogs, creating a homely environment for students. The animals are considered an important part of the well-being and mental health focus integrated into the school curriculum. As school facilities expand, the aim is to add more animals around the campus due to their positive impact on students. Animals like well-being dogs, aquariums, and school chickens in designated areas have been introduced to provide therapeutic benefits, reduce anxiety, and create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere.

In Sharjah, a forest school and school farm were launched in November 2023, integrating animals and nature into the learning environment. GEMS Wesgreen International School in Sharjah has taken a proactive approach to student well-being by introducing various animals like goats, rabbits, tortoises, pigeons, hens, and exotic birds on campus. By interacting with animals and engaging in nature-based activities, students have shown noticeable improvements in their emotional and social well-being. The school has worked closely with regulatory authorities to ensure a safe and enriching environment for both students and animals, meeting all necessary regulations and guidelines.

Interacting with animals has helped students develop a stronger sense of empathy, responsibility, and environmental consciousness, which are vital skills for their overall development. School leaders have observed the positive impact of animals on student well-being, noting improvements in emotional and social skills. The integration of animals into the school environment has created a nurturing and supportive atmosphere, reducing anxiety and depression among students. By providing students with the opportunity to connect with nature and care for animals, schools are promoting overall well-being and academic success among their students.
