Dubai student Maha Nawaz has been selected as one of the top ten finalists for the 2024 Chegg.org Global Student Prize. Maha’s motivation stems from her desire to hear her brother’s voice and to empower People of Determination. The annual award of $100,000 is given to a student who has made a significant impact on learning and society. Maha plans to study electrical engineering and neuroscience to become a neurosurgeon specializing in brain-computer interfaces.

Maha, a student at Dubai College, stood out among 11,000 nominations and applications from 176 countries. She has created prosthetic hands using Arduino and mind-controlled technology through machine learning. Her prosthetic hand can distinguish between different actions based on brainwaves. Maha is also working with NYU Abu Dhabi on developing an EEG robotic arm for locked-in patients. If she wins the prize money, she wants to make such technology accessible to those in need.

In addition to her work in prosthetics, Maha has developed a remote patient monitoring app that tracks vital signs and prescription intake to prevent stroke and diabetic crashes. She is also dedicated to improving education and healthcare in Pakistan by introducing inexpensive robotics kits tailored to girls in rural areas. Maha’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity in STEM has been recognized by IEEE, a technical professional organization.

Excited about being a top 10 finalist, Maha looks forward to the opportunity to share her accomplishments on a global stage. The winner of the Global Student Prize will be announced in New York during the UN General Assembly week. Chegg’s Chief Communications Officer, Heather Hatlo Porter, congratulated Maha and highlighted the importance of recognizing inspiring students like her who are actively shaping a brighter future for all. Through the Global Student Prize, Chegg aims to showcase the dreams, creativity, and remarkable endeavors of students from around the world.

Maha’s innovative work in prosthetics, remote patient monitoring, and education initiatives in Pakistan has earned her a spot among the top students globally. Her dedication to empowering People of Determination and advancing technology for those in need reflects her commitment to making a positive impact in society. With the support of the Chegg.org Global Student Prize, Maha hopes to continue her mission of creating accessible and life-changing technologies for individuals facing physical and communication challenges.
