The Worldcoin (WLD) crypto project is under scrutiny in Argentina, with the province of La Rioja launching a probe into its operations. Authorities are concerned that the project is taking advantage of growing poverty and collecting sensitive information such as iris patterns, posing risks to security and privacy. The province’s Cybercrime-fighting Executive Unit has closed down one of the company’s locations and is seeking to prohibit Worldcoin from operating in the province. Similar actions have been taken in Buenos Aires, with lawmakers calling for legislation to police Worldcoin activities and imposing fines on operators.

Amidst concerns about privacy and exploitation, the Worldcoin project has seen phenomenal adoption rates in Argentina. The company has expressed intentions to establish multiple centers throughout the country and hire new employees. However, provinces like Buenos Aires and La Rioja are raising red flags and conducting investigations into Worldcoin operations. Lawmakers are calling for action to address exploitative clauses in contracts and protect citizens’ personal data. The province of La Rioja has incorporated fourth-generation rights in its constitution, which include data protection, prompting concerns about minors being involved in iris scans.

Authorities in Chile have also expressed concerns about Worldcoin’s operations, leading to the operator pledging to verify the ages of individuals who undergo iris scans. Despite these concerns, thousands of Argentinian citizens have visited Worldcoin centers, and an unofficial reselling industry has emerged with recipients exchanging coins for fiat currency at below market value. The project’s growing popularity in Latin America has caught the attention of regulatory bodies and lawmakers, prompting investigations and calls for stricter regulations to protect citizens from potential risks associated with the project.

As the Worldcoin project continues to expand its presence in Argentina and other Latin American countries, authorities are stepping up efforts to ensure compliance with privacy and data protection laws. With concerns about exploitation and privacy violations, regulatory bodies are closely monitoring the project’s operations and taking action against any potential breaches. It remains to be seen how these investigations and regulations will impact the future of the Worldcoin project in Argentina and the broader Latin American region.
