The shrimp fishing season has begun in various coastal villages in the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, Dhofar, and Al Wusta and will continue for three months until the end of November. Salem bin Sultan Al Arimi, Director of the Department of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Water Resources in Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, explained that the shrimp fishing season is crucial for Omani fishermen. In the 2023 season, the total production of the Sultanate of Oman from artisanal shrimp fishing was 2,761 tonnes, with a majority caught in Al Wusta Governorate. Exports amounted to 2,680 tonnes, worth OMR 6.6 million. In the 2022 season, the total shrimp production was 1,721 tonnes, with Al Wusta Governorate leading the way.

The amount of shrimp caught in 2023 was good and had excellent economic value for fishermen and other beneficiaries of the fisheries sector. The price of one kilogram of shrimp ranges from OMR 2 to 4, depending on quantities, supply, and demand. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has directed specialists to advise fishermen to adhere to regulations and laws that preserve the sustainability of this resource. This includes using fishing gear and avoiding prohibited fishing nets to ensure the sustainability of this important economic resource.

The shrimp fishing season is crucial for Omani fishermen, providing them with economic opportunities and contributing to the country’s economy.
