The Bahrain Free Labour Unions (BFLU) recently concluded its 12th edition of the annual campaign to improve working conditions and labour rights during the summer months. The campaign, which took place in July and August, included various events and activities across different sectors in the Kingdom in collaboration with government and private entities. The focus of the campaign was on summer safety topics such as recognizing heat stress symptoms, preventing sunburn, and staying safe in hot weather. The aim of the Summer Safety Campaign is to create a safe and healthy environment for the community and raise awareness about the importance of safety during hot weather.

Sarah Al Nuaimi, the Vice President for Occupational Health and Safety at BFLU, emphasized the importance of educating workers about their rights and the risks of working under extreme heat. She expressed gratitude to the companies and institutions that supported the campaign and highlighted the significant impact of their contribution to its success. The campaign specifically focused on heat stress, protection from harmful sunlight, and proper nutrition during the summer months. Al Nuaimi also called for an extension of the midday work ban to three months starting from mid-June to mid-September to ensure the health and safety of workers during this period of high temperatures.

President of BFLU, Yaqoub Yusuf Mohammed, emphasized the campaign’s goal of reaffirming workers’ rights and promoting a safe working environment through various initiatives. These initiatives included providing occupational health and safety requirements, conducting awareness programmes for workers, organizing workshops and educational seminars, distributing media materials, and awareness leaflets at workplaces. The campaign saw widespread participation from both government and private institutions, resulting in positive outcomes for strengthening workers’ rights and improving working conditions. Mohammed reiterated BFLU’s commitment to continue efforts throughout the year to protect and raise awareness about workers’ rights.

The BFLU’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee, along with all teams, volunteers, supporting companies, institutions, and official entities such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Works, and Ministry of Information, all played a crucial role in facilitating access to workers and ensuring the campaign’s success. Their combined efforts provided essential guidance and education to workers, contributing to a safe and fair working environment. By collaborating with various sectors and entities, the BFLU aims to create a lasting impact on workers’ rights and safety in the workplace, promoting a culture of awareness and accountability among all parties involved.

As the Summer Safety Campaign continues to evolve and expand, it underscores the importance of proactive measures to ensure the well-being of workers during extreme weather conditions. By focusing on key areas such as providing occupational health and safety requirements, educating workers about their legal rights, and disseminating awareness materials, the campaign aims to empower workers and create a safer working environment. The support and collaboration from government and private institutions further strengthen the campaign’s impact, leading to positive outcomes in promoting workers’ rights and improving working conditions. Through continued efforts and cooperation, the BFLU remains committed to advocating for workers’ rights and raising awareness about the importance of safety in the workplace.

In conclusion, the BFLU’s Summer Safety Campaign serves as a vital platform for advocating for workers’ rights and promoting a safe working environment. By engaging in educational initiatives, awareness programmes, and collaborative efforts with various entities, the campaign seeks to empower workers and ensure their well-being during challenging weather conditions. The commitment and dedication of all parties involved, from volunteers to supporting companies and official entities, demonstrate a collective effort to prioritize safety and improve working conditions for all workers. As the campaign continues to make strides in promoting awareness and accountability, it sets a valuable precedent for upholding workers’ rights and advocating for a fair and secure working environment.
