Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently opened two major bridges at Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road. These bridges span 1,350 meters and have a combined capacity of approximately 8,000 vehicles per hour. This is part of a larger project by the RTA that aims to reduce travel time by 30% and increase the capacity of existing intersections and bridges by 19,600 vehicles per hour. The Al Khail Road Development Project, which involves the construction of 3,300-meter-long bridges and the widening of lanes over 6,820 meters, has been completed by 80%, according to the RTA.
Improvements are also spread across seven sites on Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zaa’beel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The two newly opened bridges include the Zaa’beel bridge, which is 700 meters long with three lanes connecting traffic from Zaa’beel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali, and the Al Quoz 1 bridge, a 650-meter-long bridge with two lanes connecting traffic from Al Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali.
The project also includes improvement works at various sites along Al Khail Road. These include adding a new lane in Al Jaddaf to improve traffic flow towards Deira, constructing bridges in the Meydan area, and improving surface roads in Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. These enhancements are aimed at increasing traffic capacity and flow in these areas. Last May, RTA completed widening works in Al Jaddaf and Business Bay, adding new lanes to improve traffic flow towards Deira and Business Bay.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, the Al Khail Road Development Project is a strategic initiative to develop parallel and supporting road corridors to Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. Al Khail Road is a significant arterial road in Dubai, extending from the Business Bay Crossing to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. With five lanes in each direction, expanding to more than six lanes in some sections, Al Khail Road plays a crucial role in Dubai’s transportation network.
The ongoing improvements along Al Khail Road are part of the broader effort by RTA to enhance transportation infrastructure and traffic flow in Dubai. With the completion of these bridges and the widening of lanes, the capacity for vehicle movement is expected to increase significantly, leading to reduced travel times and improved efficiency on the road. These developments also aim to address the growing traffic demands in key areas like Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zaa’beel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle.
Overall, the completion of these bridges and improvement works along Al Khail Road marks a significant milestone in Dubai’s infrastructure development. The increased capacity and improved traffic flow will not only benefit commuters and residents but also contribute to the overall economic growth and development of the city. As RTA continues to invest in transportation projects, Dubai’s road network is set to become more efficient and sustainable, supporting the growing needs of a rapidly expanding city.
