The UAE’s upcoming amnesty program, set to begin on September 1, has brought relief to hundreds of overstaying expats. Many illegal residents and those who overstayed their visit visa period will have the opportunity to rectify their status or return home without facing penalties. The program, announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), will not impose fines or fees during the two-month amnesty period. This initiative aims to help individuals like Kamil, a Bangladeshi worker who arrived in the UAE on a visit visa in December 2019 but faced challenges securing his residency visa due to the covid pandemic.

Kamil worked on a visit visa for three months but was unable to obtain his residency visa due to circumstances beyond his control. Now, with the upcoming amnesty program, he sees a second chance to work in the UAE peacefully after finding a job. Similarly, Mohammed Saqlain, a Pakistani national who arrived in the UAE on a visit visa last year, shared his story of hardship after overstaying, leading him to take on odd jobs to survive. The amnesty program has given Saqlain renewed hope, allowing him the opportunity to return home and start fresh when he comes back to the UAE.

The upcoming amnesty in the UAE is the fourth program of its kind since 2007, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing overstaying residents with a chance to start a new life free from penalties. The initiative has been welcomed by many individuals who found themselves in difficult situations due to overstaying their visas or residency permits. For Kamil, this government scheme represents an opportunity to live his dream of working in the UAE, while Saqlain sees it as a chance to reunite with his family and ensure compliance with the law upon his return.

Overall, the upcoming UAE amnesty program offers hope and a fresh start to individuals who have been living in uncertainty and facing challenges due to their residency status. The government’s decision to waive fines and fees during the amnesty period demonstrates a commitment to supporting these individuals and providing them with a pathway to rectify their status or return home without facing financial burdens. As the program begins on September 1, it is expected to benefit numerous overstaying expats who are looking to resolve their legal status and move forward in their lives.
