Swedish football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Known for coaching England from 2001 to 2006, he announced in February 2023 that he was stepping back from public life due to health issues. Born in Western Sweden in 1948, Eriksson found success as a football manager after retiring from his playing career as a defender. He managed various high-profile teams, including leading England to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002 and 2006.

Eriksson began his managerial career in 1977 with Swedish club Degerfors IF, before moving on to manage IFK Goteborg and international clubs such as Benfica in Portugal, Roma, and Lazio in Italy. As the first foreigner to manage England’s national squad, he achieved notable success, including the memorable 5-1 win over Germany in a World Cup qualifier. However, England was knocked out of the World Cup in 2002 and 2006, and the Euros in 2004 in penalty shootouts.

After leaving the England job in 2006, Eriksson went on to manage Mexico, Ivory Coast, and the Philippines, but never his native Sweden’s national squad. In March, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of managing English football club Liverpool in a charity match against Ajax Legends. The emotional experience saw him shedding tears before kick-off as he received a standing ovation from the crowd while fans sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, leaving a lasting memory for him.

Eriksson’s impact on English football was recognized by Mark Bullingham, CEO of England’s Football Association, who praised him for the special memories he created for England fans during his time as manager. England’s Prince William also paid tribute to Eriksson, acknowledging his charisma and passion for the game. His former club Lazio expressed their gratitude for everything he had done for them, highlighting the lasting impact he had on the teams he managed.

Throughout his career, Eriksson made significant contributions to the world of football, leaving a legacy that will be forever remembered. His ability to lead teams to success on both domestic and international levels made him a respected figure in the football community. His sudden passing came as a shock to many, with his agent Bo Gustavsson confirming that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home. Eriksson’s dedication to the sport and the teams he managed will always be remembered by fans and players alike.
