Gaming and Esports have become immensely popular in recent years, with the 2024 Esports World Cup held in Riyadh boasting a prize purse of $62.5 million. While gaming offers many psychological benefits, it is essential to maintain a balance and be aware of the potential risks associated with excessive gaming. A small minority of gamers may develop problematic gaming patterns, leading to issues such as preoccupation with gaming, loss of control, and negative consequences in various aspects of life. The World Health Organization has recognized gaming disorder as a diagnosable health problem, emphasizing the importance of addressing the potential harms of excessive gaming.

Dr. Justin Thomas, a chartered psychologist and senior researcher at the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, highlights the positive aspects of gaming and Esports, focusing on the social and psychological benefits they provide. Gaming can help individuals make friends, create social connections, and strengthen one’s sense of social identity. Research has shown that a strong sense of belonging can improve health outcomes and prevent various health problems. Additionally, gaming is being explored as an add-on to traditional psychotherapy, providing engaging and immersive experiences that can help individuals learn coping strategies and problem-solving skills in a controlled environment.

Despite the positive aspects of gaming, it is crucial to recognize and address the potential risks associated with excessive gaming. While gaming can offer many benefits, including the formation of friendships and a sense of belonging, a small percentage of gamers may develop problematic patterns that can negatively impact their lives. It is essential for individuals to maintain a balance between gaming and other aspects of life, taking breaks, prioritizing education and health, and being aware of the signs of gaming disorder. By staying informed and mindful of their gaming habits, individuals can enjoy the benefits of gaming while minimizing the risks associated with excessive gaming.

The Sync Digital Wellbeing Summit in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, explored the impact of technology on physical, mental, and social well-being, with a particular focus on gaming. Panel discussions at the summit highlighted the positive aspects of gaming and Esports, emphasizing the importance of balance, breaks, and prioritizing other aspects of life. Gaming is seen as a modern expression of humanity’s playfulness, offering opportunities for friendship, social connections, and a sense of belonging. By celebrating the benefits of gaming while acknowledging the potential risks, individuals can enjoy gaming responsibly and reap the psychological benefits it offers.

As gaming and Esports continue to grow in popularity, it is essential for individuals to be aware of the potential risks associated with excessive gaming. With the use of extended reality and haptic devices enhancing the gaming experience, the boundaries between sports and Esports are becoming more blurred. While the financial incentives for elite gamers are substantial, regular gamers can also benefit from the rich psychological rewards that gaming offers. By promoting a balanced approach to gaming and being mindful of their gaming habits, individuals can enjoy the positive aspects of gaming while minimizing the potential risks associated with excessive gaming.
