Abu Dhabi libraries have seen a significant increase in the participation of individuals with disabilities in their reading programs, with up to a 70% spike. These initiatives, such as ‘I can read’ and ‘Readers of determination,’ aim to stimulate creativity, improve cognitive and communication skills, and foster emotional well-being. By providing spaces for engagement with literature, literacy skill development, and a love for reading, these programs have been successful in boosting confidence among participants.

Reading workshops like ‘I can read’ have seen a 70% increase in participation this year, with over 3,000 attendees across various age groups. These workshops not only provide individuals with disabilities a chance to connect with literature but also offer storytelling, artistic sessions, and interactive workshops to enrich their reading experiences. The positive feedback from parents and the consistent turnout speak to the community’s interest in these programs that aim to create an inclusive environment for skill development and enhancing quality of life.

Regular library visits have resulted in notable improvements among individuals with disabilities, including enhanced literacy skills, increased confidence in communication, and improved social interaction. Maktaba, the library management arm of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, offers specially developed books tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, including accessible formats like Braille, audiobooks, easy-to-read texts, and interactive materials to ensure everyone can benefit from reading.

The ‘Readers of Determination’ support program highlights the crucial role of families in fostering children’s success and helping them balance study and recreational activities. By enhancing reading skills among individuals with disabilities and those with learning difficulties, the program has led to significant improvements in reading skills and overall confidence. The workshops provide a supportive environment for continuous growth, with many parents praising the expertise of special education specialists in addressing specific needs and promoting a love for reading.

Overall, the tailored programs offered by Abu Dhabi libraries have been instrumental in providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to acquire knowledge, connect with diverse perspectives, and experience a sense of achievement through reading. By focusing on enhancing skills, fostering a love for reading, and supporting individual needs, these programs have had a positive impact on participants, leading to improved literacy skills, greater confidence, and increased social interaction. Through initiatives like ‘I can read’ and ‘Readers of Determination,’ Abu Dhabi libraries are creating an inclusive environment that nurtures talents and enriches the lives of individuals with disabilities.
