The dedicated bus lane along First Al Khail Street in Al Quoz has been replaced by regular broken white lanes, allowing private vehicles to use those lanes. Despite the removal of the bus lane, signs warning motorists of a Dh600 penalty for unauthorized use of the lane remain in place. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has been contacted for a comment on this change.
The erstwhile dedicated bus lane was operational in one direction, running from Al Quoz Bus Station to the bowling center towards Za’abeel, crossing Al Meydan Road. Unlike other bus lanes in Dubai that have distinct red markings and solid yellow lines, this particular lane did not have such markings. In a statement made in June, RTA mentioned that the yellow lane was temporary and that a study was ongoing to make a final decision on its utilization.
Motorists caught using dedicated bus lanes in Dubai face a fine of Dh600. The presence of a solid yellow line indicates no passing, while a broken yellow line allows drivers to cross for lane changes or overtaking. The former bus lane along First Al Khail Street now features broken yellow lines to accommodate vehicles turning right to Latifa bint Hamdan Street or using the service road near the Galadari office.
The introduction of dedicated bus lanes in Dubai is aimed at improving the reliability of public bus transportation. RTA had announced plans in April to construct more dedicated bus and taxi lanes across the city, with the goal of reducing journey times by up to 60% on select routes. Extending these lanes is expected to increase public transport usage by up to 30% and alleviate traffic congestion.
Advocates of dedicated bus lanes, such as Thomas Edelmann from RoadSafetyUAE, emphasize that these lanes not only shorten travel times but also ensure punctual bus arrivals by preventing delays caused by traffic congestion. Edelmann believes that increased bus usage resulting from dedicated lanes will lead to fewer vehicles on the roads, reducing traffic jams and pollution in the long run. The enforcement of dedicated bus lanes plays a crucial role in improving public transport infrastructure and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
