HMC provides emergency medical treatment to visitors with mandatory insurance

Visitors to Qatar can rest assured knowing that emergency medical treatment and assistance are readily available through Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). In order to ensure that all visitors receive quality healthcare if needed, Qatar introduced the Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme in 2023. This scheme provides coverage for visitors up to QR150,000 for emergency medical treatment, but certain conditions must be met for the treatment to be covered. If a person’s condition is deemed a medical emergency and their treatment costs exceed the covered amount, their private insurance may cover the additional costs based on their policy coverage.

It is important for visitors to understand that if their condition is not categorized as a medical emergency, it will not be covered by Qatar’s Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme. However, their private insurance may still provide coverage depending on the policy terms. In cases where HMC does not have an agreement with the visitor’s insurance company, the visitor will need to pay for their treatment upfront and seek reimbursement from their insurance company following its policy guidelines.

Since 2023, all visitors to Qatar, with the exception of GCC nationals, are required to pay for any medical treatment they may need during their stay. The Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme covers not only emergency medical treatment but also other services such as emergency medical assistance, COVID-19 and quarantine expenses, and repatriation of mortal remains. This ensures that visitors have access to comprehensive healthcare services while in Qatar.

In the event that a visitor does not have mandatory insurance but is covered by private medical health insurance, their treatment may still be covered depending on their policy. However, individuals should be prepared to make payments if their private insurance does not cover the full cost of treatment. If HMC does not have an agreement with the visitor’s insurance company, the visitor will be required to pay for their treatment upfront and then seek reimbursement as per their insurance policy.

Overall, the Mandatory Visitor Health Insurance Scheme in Qatar aims to provide visitors with access to emergency medical treatment and assistance during their stay in the country. Visitors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the details of the scheme and ensure that they have appropriate insurance coverage before traveling to Qatar. By understanding the healthcare system and insurance requirements in Qatar, visitors can be better prepared in case they require medical treatment during their visit.
