To enhance recycling practices for sustainability and a circular economy, the Ministry of Municipality has distributed containers to about 80 percent of households in Doha for sorting waste at the source. This initiative is part of a five-year plan implemented by the General Cleanliness Department, which involves providing blue and grey containers for segregating recyclable materials and organic waste separately. The blue containers are designated for recyclable waste, which is then taken to recycling plants in Al Afja, Mesaieed.
The Ministry of Municipality is actively promoting the importance of recycling through various campaigns and events. One such event is the annual Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference & Exhibition, which aims to raise awareness about recycling practices and reducing waste. Additionally, Al Afja in Mesaieed is being developed as a hub for recycling industry in order to meet Qatar’s sustainability goals. Fifty plots of land have been allocated for building recycling factories that will focus on processing plastic, paper, wood, oil, medical waste, and organic waste.
The Waste Recycling and Treatment Department is encouraging waste sorting at the source not only in households but also in companies, factories, and institutions across the country. The General Cleanliness Department has already placed blue containers alongside existing grey containers in various areas of Doha, including Umm Lakhba, Madinat Khalifa Al Shamalia, Al Markhiya, Nuaijah, Hilal, Lejbailat, Hazm Al Markhiya, and Al Qassar. These blue containers are specifically for recyclable materials such as glass, plastic, papers, and metals, while the grey containers are for food waste and cleaning materials.
The waste sorting at source programme is being rolled out in phases, with the second phase set to run for over two years until 2025 and covering all households in Doha. The programme will then be extended to Umm Salal, Al Daayen, Al Khor, and Al Shamal in 2026, followed by Al Rayan, Al Wakra, and Al Sheehaniya by the end of 2027. This initiative aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which emphasizes the importance of boosting recycling practices for sustainability and a circular economy.
By implementing the waste sorting at source programme, Qatar aims to reduce the burden on waste management and promote a more sustainable way of handling waste. The provision of blue containers for recyclable materials and grey containers for organic waste is a practical step towards achieving these goals. With the ongoing efforts to educate the public about the benefits of recycling and the establishment of recycling factories in Al Afja, Qatar is moving towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future. Through initiatives like the Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference & Exhibition, the country is actively working towards creating a circular economy that prioritizes recycling and waste reduction.
