The annual Marhaba event at Qatar Foundation provided new university students with valuable insights about the benefits of leveraging new technologies, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), to enhance their academic journeys. Francisco Marmolejo, President of Higher Education at Qatar Foundation, emphasized the importance of collaboration between humans and AI to achieve better results. The event, themed “Education 2.0: Pioneering the Future Together,” aimed to inspire students to explore and innovate as they embark on their academic endeavors within the Education City ecosystem.

In his address, Marmolejo encouraged students to make the most of their unique educational experience at Qatar Foundation, highlighting the importance of excelling academically while also engaging with peers, exploring new ideas, and growing personally. He stressed that the lessons learned, experiences gained, and community built at Qatar Foundation will stay with students long after graduation, shaping their future endeavors. Marmolejo welcomed students to the Qatar Foundation community, expressing confidence that they have a bright future ahead with the support and opportunities available within the educational ecosystem.

Khaled A. Harras, Senior Associate Dean at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, discussed the role of AI in shaping the future of graduates, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach where human creativity and AI technology complement each other. Harras addressed concerns about AI potentially replacing jobs but also creating new opportunities, stressing the importance of using AI as a tool rather than a shortcut in the learning process. He cautioned students to be mindful of the potential pitfalls of relying too heavily on AI and urged them to use technology to enhance their learning experience responsibly.

Dr. James Olsen, faculty member at Georgetown University in Qatar, emphasized the importance of actively caring about one’s education and the need to continually learn and adapt in an ever-changing job market. Olsen highlighted the necessity of developing strong learning skills and being proactive about one’s educational journey. He underscored the importance of effort in learning and adapting to new challenges, emphasizing that the job landscape is constantly evolving, requiring individuals to be adaptable and committed to lifelong learning.

The panel discussion at Marhaba titled “AI in Education: Balancing Innovation and Ethical Responsibility” provided students with valuable insights into the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in education. Speakers stressed the importance of using AI responsibly and ethically to enhance learning outcomes without compromising the integrity of the educational process. The panel encouraged students to approach AI as a tool for improving their learning experience rather than as a shortcut, highlighting the need for discernment and caution when utilizing AI technologies.

Overall, the Marhaba event at Qatar Foundation served as a platform for new university students to gain valuable insights into the role of AI in education, the importance of collaboration between humans and technology, and the need for ethical considerations in leveraging new technologies. The event inspired students to embrace innovation, creativity, and personal growth as they navigate their academic journeys within the Qatar Foundation community. With the support and resources available at Education City, students are well-equipped to succeed academically, professionally, and personally as they pioneer the future of education and technology together.
