AlHanouf Gharib, a mother of five, is a leading engineer at Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE), focusing on developing smart city infrastructure in the northern emirates. With a bachelor’s degree in sustainable and renewable energy engineering, she has been promoting resource efficiency and climate action in her work for the past eight years. AlHanouf has led projects on water conservation, retrofitting buildings, developing electric vehicle charging stations, and smart metering infrastructure, showcasing her commitment to sustainability in urban development.

In the male-dominated field of engineering, AlHanouf has shattered glass ceilings with her dedication and expertise in creating smart cities that prioritize sustainability and cater to the needs of residents. Despite the challenging nature of her career, she finds strength in her family, who provide unwavering support. Her husband and children, aged between 1 and 11 years old, encourage her pursuits and understand the importance of her work, inspiring her to instill values of hard work, dedication, and pursuing passions in her children.

Balancing a demanding career with raising a large family is no easy feat, but AlHanouf manages to advocate for energy conservation both at work and at home. She encourages her family and domestic helpers to conserve energy and water, believing that small changes can have a significant impact on the environment. Additionally, she conducts energy conservation workshops in the community, reaching over 1,500 individuals and promoting responsible environmental practices.

AlHanouf’s dedication and commitment extend beyond her own family to the broader community, emphasizing the importance of investing in education and continuous learning. She believes that knowledge is power and encourages young Emirati women to believe in their abilities and dare to dream. Through her work and advocacy efforts, AlHanouf serves as a role model for aspiring female engineers and environmentalists, showcasing the impact that one individual can have on shaping a more sustainable future for the UAE and beyond.
